Respect for African Americans
Historically, Sleepy Hollow land was purchased as 270 acres in 1822 and 23. That was a time of slavery moving to tenancy after emancipation and later "Jim Crow" laws. African Americans left a great deal to be proud of on the property such as bricks for the barn, house and on Clemson University campus. African Americans prepared land, built the house, probably fashioned most of the materials, and many other things. It is out of respect that various pictures are hung in areas of the barn and more are planned. Everything was over 25 years old including a magazine cover from 1922. Sleepy Hollow would have covered or taken down anything the customer thought inappropriate but was never asked. Three prints are hung in a room that were painted by an African American local from Pendleton created from stories of living that his grandmother told to him as a young man. He honored his grandmother by creating paintings of her early life and we have them in the barn out of respect for African American's contributions to Sleepy Hollow.
