Diamond professionals use four factors to describe and classify diamonds.  When selecting your diamond engagement ring, ask to see samples different grades of diamonds so you can compare between them. The criteria always used for determining a diamond's quality (and cost) are called "The Four Cs." They are as follow:

Color - The less color a diamond has, the better. The Gemological Institute of America grades color in diamonds with letters, starting with "D" as the clearest and going all the way to "Z" as the least clear. Obviously, the clearest type diamonds are also the most expensive.

Clarity - Few things in nature are absolutely perfect, and diamonds are no exception. Clarity is the relative absence of irregularities, blemishes, nicks, and scratches on a diamond’s surface.  The higher a diamond's clarity, the more expensive it is.

Cut - The cut of a diamond refers to its proportions, symmetry and finish. Very well cut diamonds are bright, symmetrical, and have a high degree of sparkle when shown in light. There are different ways of cutting diamonds, and the best cuts reflect light in the most breathtaking ways possible. Different diamond shapes include round, oval, pear, marquis, emerald cut, and heart shaped.

Carat - Carats refer to the unit of weight used to measure diamonds.  The larger the diamond, the higher the number of carats.
