Wedding announcements are a custom that dates back a thousand years. The origins behind wedding announcements stem from a catholic mandate which stated that a couple must announce their intention to get married to the community three times in case there was any objection.  As time moved forward, the tradition of wedding announcements then became less religious and more secular.
