"Don't Use! Extremely Unaccommodating"
Amy Cary, NC
February 16, 2009
I just cancelled my contract with V-Sound Productions for my wedding next Saturday, and have to eat all of the costs, of course. But, the peace of mind is worth it because I just do not feel comfortable using this DJ. I have to say that it was my mistake not using someone that either the venue contact or any of my other vendors have heard of before. This DJ said that he had done an event/events at our venue (Prestonwood Country Club) before but it turns out that he has not. Now he says that he never said that and that he does so many events he cannot remember exactly which venues he has been to… Right. The owner/DJ says that he has 23 years of experience and a 97% approval rating. But, none of my other wedding vendors have heard of him (he may have moved from another state). Either way, when I asked if I could speak to one of his past clients as a reference he said I could not (against his policy for privacy reasons). But, since no one around here can vouch for him and he won't let you talk to past clients, that is a red flag. My number one reason for cancelling is that I cannot believe that someone with so much experience could possibly be so unaccommodating. For example, I asked him to not play certain songs at the wedding (Chicken Dance, Electric Slide, etc.). This is not an unusual request--in fact, my married friends all said that they did the same thing and it is one of the main tips you see on wedding website regarding reception music. But, he responded that he gets lots of requests for the songs and would play them if the dance floor was slow. I had to respond and say, NO, under no circumstance are these songs to be played. If the guests request them he can simply tell them that the bride has asked that they not be played. ALL of my requests were like this. He tried to push back on everything. It turns out that we needed him for 5 hours instead of 6. I let him know this and made it clear that it was my fault that I had the overall hours wrong and didn’t expect money back, but just wanted to let him know. He told me that normally changes like this to the contract meant a “contract change fee” of $100. I asked him not to bring his lighting because the Preston ballroom has great soft lighting provided by chandeliers. Again, he mentioned a change fee—although this should make his job easier to not have to bring and setup additional equipment. I have many more examples of how much of a pain he was to work with but since this post is long already, I won’t go through them all. When I expressed my frustration to him he insisted that he “went above and beyond” and said that it was difficult for him balancing the needs/requests of the person paying (my in-laws), me and the venue. That is the most ridiculous load of crap and honestly it was the last straw. My in-laws had not had any interaction beyond paying and signing the contract and since when does a DJ try to meet the needs of the venue? Both my in-laws and the venue only want me to be happy. HE is the ONLY one that couldn’t seem to grasp that concept. I gave him 2 stars instead of one because I never had the chance to hear him DJ. So, who knows, despite being a complete pain, maybe he is a decent DJ. But, I doubt it.
Vendor response: My name is Joe Vaccaro and as the owner of V-Sound Productions, it is my duty to respond to this inaccurate review of our DJ services. Since this is a long response, it may not show in its entirety depending on length of response permitted by this web site. A full response is available upon request through V-Sound Productions. I personally worked with this client and oversaw the performance of all V-Sound Productions services performed for her wedding. Between Amy, her in-laws and the venue, V-Sound Productions performed 28 e-mail consultations, numerous telephone consultations and two (2) in-person consultations. These consultations included discussions regarding the music, schedule, announcements, room layout, sound and lighting equipment and other aspects of her wedding reception. This amounted to many hours of time and resources devoted specifically to her wedding. As you will see from the amount of time, number of consultations and from the examples below, V-Sound Productions work diligently to accommodate this client but went above and beyond in working to accommodate their needs and wants. Throughout this time, V-Sound Productions conducted itself professional and courteous manner with our client despite repeated insults from our client and the venue. I will try to address each of her criticisms one at a time. First, her criticism of our 23 years of experience and 97% approval rating. She claims in her review that this is a “red flag” since none of her vendors have heard of my company nor was she able to contact any of our clients. There are good reasons for this. In an area the size of Raleigh/Durham, there are hundreds of wedding vendors. No one vendor has heard of every other vendor. After many years serving the Raleigh/Durham area, we are still learning of new vendors every day. Even if some of her vendors could “vouch” for us, how accurate could it be based upon their limited knowledge of our company? Our 97% approval rating is based upon hundreds of client feedback forms completed by our clients at the end of their event. This 97% represents the percentage of our clients who rated V-Sound Productions DJ services either “EXCELLENT” or “VERY GOOD”. These client feedback forms and the claims listed are all documented in writing and are available by request. Direct comments from 25 clients are posted for public viewing on the V-Sound Productions web site. Again all of which have been documented in writing. I offered to provide her with this documentation, she read these comments, still refused to accept them and declined to see the documentation that supports them. It is against our Privacy Policy & Code Of Ethics to release specific client information to a 3rd party or to allow clients or potential clients to speak with other clients. See www.vsoundproductions.com for a complete details of our Privacy Policy & Code Of Ethics. This something we maintain for our clients and have received appreciation from our clients for doing so. On her next point, her criticism of our accommodation on the music she wanted. This is particularly inaccurate on my levels. First, she wanted various types of music American, Arabic and some Korean music. Due to the size and variety of our music library, we were able to provide an extensive selection of all the music types she wanted. She only needed to provide us with two special songs. These were rare ethnic songs that were a specific ethnic custom of her in-laws. Amy provided the two songs on a CD and we were more than happy to play them for her. The final “do not play” song list she submitted was only sent to us four days before she cancelled. We informed her that a few of the songs on her list were songs that were very popular requests typically made by guests and may hinder our performance. She first said that she only wanted to have these songs played only if the dance floor was “DEAD”. We accommodated her on this request. A couple of days later she changed her mind and stated that she did not want any of the songs on that list played “under any circumstance”. My exact reply back to her was “No problem. I will make sure not to play these songs under any circumstance”. As with all aspects of her wedding (and with all of our clients), we listened carefully to her requests, gave input based on our experience and left the final decision to her. Moving on to her next criticism, the “contract change fee”. As I informed her (and as it was stated on the contract which her in-laws had a copy of since they paid for our services), a “contract change fee” only applies when a date, time or location change needs to be made. There is also a provision for V-Sound Productions to offer the client a one-time waiver on this fee, which I offered her if needed. Amy and her in-laws frequently provided inaccurate information regarding the times and other various aspects of the wedding and our services. This is one of the main reasons why so many consultations were needed to accommodate her. Amy and her in-laws frequently changed their mind on various aspects and frequently misunderstood and/or misrepresented our responses. Her in-laws only reserved our services approximately 6 weeks before her wedding. V-Sound Productions normally finalizes all details 4 weeks out. I gave her extra time because I understood that she needed extra time and I wanted to make sure we accommodated everything she wanted. Regarding her next criticism, the lights and sound equipment. The DJ services package we provide includes a sound system and light show. This was included on the contract that her in-laws signed. If they decide they do not want the lights and/or sound system, then a change needs to be made on the contract and the client must approve it writing. This was explained to her and her in-laws. We were more than happy to accommodate her on the lights. If she didn’t want them, we would not bring them. However, we could not accommodate her on having V-Sound Productions use the venue’s sound system instead of our own. I explained to her and her in-laws the legal and logistical reasons why we could not use the venue’s sound system instead of our own. We even offered to waive this policy and other policies if the client and the venue would willing to sign a Damage Waiver agreement absolving V-Sound Productions of any liability or damage of the venue’s equipment. We never heard back from the client or the venue on this issue. Amy and her in-laws were very picky regarding equipment. A concern they only expressed to us days before the wedding. I explained the type of equipment V-Sound Productions uses and even sent pictures. No one in 23 years has ever complained about our equipment or its display. Many of Amy and her in-laws concerns and requests were only expressed just days before the wedding making it very difficult to accommodate her. Despite this we were able to accommodate her and almost everything she wanted. Many of their concerns were addressed in the service contract and in the wedding planner given to them during our first in-person consultation the day they reserved services with us if they had only read this information provided them. Despite the fact they were in breach of the V-Sound Productions service contract on various points, I continued to work with her, her in-laws and the venue even though it was perfectly within my legal rights to cancel services on them and keep their entire payment. I will conclude with addressing her last criticism. It is the V-Sound Productions philosophy that a good DJ will work to benefit of everyone attending and working at the event not just one or two people regardless of who they are. It is always our goal to work to provide our services in a way that benefits and improves the event as a whole. No one person’s input or ideas will always be right but only working together as a team will ensure a successful event and happy clients. As with all aspects of her wedding (and with all of our clients), we listened carefully to her requests, gave input based on our experience and left the final decisions to her. We value our clients and their input. Since no one person can do everything themselves, it is important that the client trusts and values the inputs from the vendors they hire and likewise the vendors listen carefully and work diligently to fulfill their clients wants and needs. Our 97% approval rating over hundreds of events bears out the benefits and success of this philosophy. I strongly believe that particularly in this case, V-Sound Productions went “above and beyond” to please this client. V-Sound Productions is growing and expanding while other DJ companies are downsizing or going out of business. We are only able to grow and expand due to our ability to provide quality products and services and to maintain and grow a satisfied client base. We hope this any questions and/or concerns you may have regarding Amy’s review and our company. We look forward to the opportunity to serve you and assisting you in making your next event a success.
Sincerely,
Joe Vaccaro
