This was back in 3/04. I am still galled by Mary Claire's actions and thought that if she was still in wedding planning business, I should put the facts out there to other brides. I was the mother of the bride. We hired Mary Claire to help tie up some loose ends for this out of town wedding, coordinate the vendors we had hired on site, and be there on the day of the wedding to make sure everything happened on time and was coordinated. She said that her primary experience was doing weddings at her former bed and breakfast. We were on a budget but she got in high gear recommending and insisting on the need for fancy programs, visitor gift bags, etc, etc.. We did so reluctantly because we were paying for all 8 bridesmaids dresses and rooms. She took far more time telling us how much and how soon we should tip our vendors right after the wedding than anything else. Before the wedding, we had a meeting with all the vendors, wherein she was late. I was appalled at how bossy and inhospitable she was to them for which I apologized to them afterwards and asked her to be a leader but not a domineering one. On the day before the wedding where we were to hold the rehearsal dinner, I was driving into town. At the last minute, she asked me to meet her so she could get the wedding dress and have it steam pressed. She also insisted that all bridgesmaids had to have their dresses pressed to. (Sight unseen). I told her I didn't think it necessary but she insisted. She said she'd meet me when I got in town to pick it up and take it to her cleaners. (I kept wondering how many beds she was trying to feather and perhaps get referral fees.) The directions she gave me to meet her were way wrong and she couldn't figure out how to direct me. We wasted an hour, taking away my time to wrap two gifts. She apologized. I asked her if she'd wrap the gifts since I now didn't have time before the dinner and she had a helper. At the wedding, she had 2 people there, only one of whom I'd met. I didn't know who was in charge of what and I never saw what Mary was doing. Little things were going wrong and I was trying to cover them myself This made me almost miss my photo time with my daughter and family. I just got 5 minutes. While I was running there, she stuck an invoice for an extra $270 in front of me asking me to pay for it right then. I didn't even have a purse with me! I told her we had a set price to cover all that we both agreed to and what could she possibly be billing me for? She said this was for supplemental services. What was on the invoice? A bill for $270 for "additional phone calls, faxes, mileage, returning items, multiple changes plus gift wrapping $20. I asked her what those extras were for and she just asked me to pay for them quickly so I could get on with the day. I said, I'll have to think about it. My jaw was set. Next thing I know, she completely disappeared. One girl was left behind making sure we got down the aisle. I asked where Mary Clair had gone since no one was making any announcements about when the guests should go to this room or that or queing the dj or anything! The DJ had to take over and he saved the day. The vendors thought that was very unprofessional and so did I. This woman even had the nerve to send me a follow up bill a few weeks later. She said something like: I heard the you had a good time at your wedding so I am sure you were pleased with my work. I don't understand why you haven't paid this invoice yet. Consider yourself forewarned. I presume my vendors will warn you about her too if asked. I saved all the papers (agreement, correspondence and invoices) so I don't imagine she would protest the facts I have stated above. Perhaps she has improved over time....
