I had read about Rotellas Trattoria in the Idaho Statesman a year or so ago and was impressed that the owner was trained in Italy. Finally my wife and I had the opportunity to drive across the city and try it out. I went in with the most optimistic anticipation of an enjoyable authentic European dining experience but ended up with one of the worst meals I've ever had in my life. Even though the bread they served us upfront was not that great and my glass of house red very poor, my spirits were not dimmed. We ordered a polenta appetizer topped with seared ahi which was pretty good. The salad was ok. We had both ordered ravioli at the beginning of our meal . . . meat for me and cheese for my wife, but for some reason our meals took forever. I was a bit perturbed since while it was taking so long the chef/owner was spending most of his time in a leisurely fashion in the front end of the restaurant talking to people. Not sure who was doing the cooking but whoever it was they had no business being in the kitchen as will be seen. When our meals finally arrived they looked like a big unappetizing bowl of thick deep red sauce. Mixed in to mine were pools of water. I took a bite of my ravioli . . . the sauce and meat tasted horrible but the worst part was the pasta was not done, the ravioli had both the taste and texture of cardboard. I have only sent meals back a few times in my life but what I had in front of me was inedible. I informed the waiter who brought me the lobster ravioli that was already done and then said something to the effect that they "cook their pasta al dente." Implying that I'm some culinary hick who is too dense to understand but since they're so nice they'll go ahead and give me another order. The lobster ravioli was horrible as well . . . tasteless filling, atrocious sauce, undercooked pasta (not as extreme as my first order) with the taste of mud. I can't imagine how someone could come up with something worse if the tried.
